2. Do restaurants pay to be in cheapeats?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our reviewers are independent and NO gratuities, favours or free food are accepted in exchange for a good profile or even inclusion in any of the cheapeats books. If one of our contributors must identify themselves to the restaurants - it will only happen AFTER they have paid for their meal.

That way we are sure that the service and food we get is the service everyone gets.

3. How do restaurants get included in cheapeats?

Restaurant have to be recommended and they have to meet the cheapeats criteria.

We ask everyone - where do you eat cheap? Cab drivers, financial planners, cops, school teachers, politicians, couriers, kids on skateboards. We even asked the head of the Bank of Canada. We take recommendations anyway they come - word of mouth, through this site, and from everyone we talk to.

If a place is recommended and we don't already know about it, our contributors are eager to check it out and make sure the cheapeats criteria are met.

4. Does cheapeats only consider restaurants in downtown Toronto?

No, the current edition of cheapeats toronto includes 365 restaurants across the entire GTA - from Mississauga to Scarborough, the lake to Thornhill. If the restaurant you are recommending is in a region not listed, just let us know - webmaster@cheapeatstoronto.com

5. What are the criteria for a restaurant to be considered?

The cheapeats criteria straight forward:

  • the restaurant MUST be recommended - by a reader, through the website, by word of mouth, by a celebrity - before it will be considered.
  • Then it must satisfy the following:
    • Is it good?
    • Is it cheap?
    • Does it have at least one seat?
  • Click for more details on the cheapeats criteria
6. Does cheapeats provide any ratings on the restaurants?

cheapeats guides provide 1-5 Ratings for each restaurant on:

7. Have you eaten at all the places that will make the book?

Yes - at least one member of the cheapeats toronto team has eaten at each restaurant in the book. If a recommendation comes in through the website, or by word of mouth, and we don't already know about it, our contributors are eager to check it out and make sure the cheapeats criteria are met.

We make sure to check all the restaurants out a couple of times before they are seriously considered for inclusion in cheapeats.

8. How did you get the celebrity input?

We asked. We contacted every celebrity we could think of or find... from the Prime Minister to Mike Bullard, from Rick Mercer to Dan Ackroyd, from Alanis Morrisette to the Leafs, and all the FoodTV chefs we could get.
